Upper Lachlan Bush Poets: Woolwagon Awards
17 November 2008

Current Australian Female Bush Poet champion, Carol HEUCHAN from Cooranbong NSW, won the Overall, magnificent, Woolwagon Trophy, made by local woodcarver Ron EVANS.
The event was held at the Crookwell Services Club last weekend. Carol was the winner of all four Bush Poetry Performance Sections and scooped the huge money pool of $1,100, from the total prizemoney of over $4,000.
In the closely contested Adult Written Section of 111 entries from Australia and New Zealand, Arthur GREEN from Queensland was the winner. Local entrant, Elizabeth EAGAN received a highly commended award.
There were three age groups in the Children’s Section and over 150 written entries were received from every State in Australia.
The Under 8 winner was Keira WARREN with a poem entitled “My Goats”.
The 8 to 12 winner was Kate KNUDSON from Mansfield in Queensland, with her poem “The Weet Bix Girl.
The 13 to 18 winner was Gemma HAMMOND from Crookwell High School with her poem entitled “Life Under The Southern Cross”.
The Childrens Performances were exceptional and the winners were:
13 to 18 age group: Gemma HAMMOND.
There were 22 adult competing poets who agreed that the competition was equal to any other major championship they had attended. And……congratulations should go to the organising committee for putting together such an entertaining weekend.
Melanie HALL, three times Australian Bush Poet Champion was a surprise guest and freely assisted with the judging and entertainment.
Last year’s Perpetual Trophy winner, Jim BROWN from Melbourne, said he was honoured to be performing at the weekend and is looking forward to next year’s awards which, has been suggested, could include yarn spinning, a poet’s brawl and a song writing competition.
Mr Graeme JOHNSON, the ‘Rhymer from Ryde’, as emcee, capably ensured the competition ran smoothly and to schedule.
Barry ‘Spud’ MURPHY, Convenor.
