Maxine Ireland’s parents lost their only son in World War I and she was the ninth daughter born two years later. She lived on a farm with neither electricity or telephone and they used the horse and sulky for transport.
The family entertained themselves by playing a piano and a violin; because Maxine was the youngest she was taught to recite, with actions. Later, one of Maxine’s school teachers took an interest in Maxine’s talent and assisted in giving her a solid foundation for her poetry writing and performing skills. After completing school Maxine trained the be a nurse and commenced her career in the health industry.
In 1942 Maxine married George and joined him managing their business. After there family grew up and left home Maxine and George travelled extensively throughout Australia and overseas; consequently, Maxine’s travel experiences are reflected in her poetry.
Although Maxine’s life has been busy with her work as well as her family she still maintained her interest in poetry. She has been heard to say “My only claim to fame (if any) is my poetry”.
Nowadays Maxine, is retired and is taking things easy, but she still spends some time entertaining "the old people".
