The Australian Bush Poets Association fosters and encourages the growth of Bush Poetry in Australia. Bush poetry contributed to the international perception of Australia and it's culture as well as influencing how Australians perceived themselves and their cultural identity. The romance of life in the bush depicted in bush poetry captured the spirit of early Australian city dwellers and lured many away from the cities to explore and settle in rural areas and regional towns which contributed to the decentralisation of Australia. Free settlers to the colonies who originated from numerous nations featured prominently in many traditional poems thereby shaping the Australian version of the English language as well as Australia’s cultural image. A substantial number of ABPA members perform traditional bush poetry at festivals, functions and bush poetry breakfasts Australia wide instigating a rapidly increasing interest of bush poetry in the wider community.
