Just a thought ...

I think it was 2017 that I stopped writing, went 'cold turkey'. I'm certainly not back but something had me looking in that direction recently and I penned this very short piece.
Sometimes I think of the pathway, the track,
the direction not taken, and long to go back
to do all those things I promised to do
when the future was painted a faraway hue.
To follow the roads that weren’t so well paved
instead of the ones that my parents had saved
for me, telling me always “That’s risky you know.
Just get a good job. That’s the right way to go.
You’ll be going to uni some learning to get.
That rock band will see you forever in debt.
And you know you’ll have many half hearted romances
with girls that you’ve met at churches and dances.
Remember your trousers must always stay zipped
and we’re Anglicans son so stick to the script.”
But I’m putting too much on them really, you see,
cause the buck has to stop where the buck’s meant to be.
And I guess what it means when it’s all said and done
is there’s only one person can shape the home run.
Now just so I don’t leave y’all with the notion
I’d rather be swimming elsewhere in the ocean
It’s just a collection of rhyming verse folks
and meant to be thought of in very broad strokes.
I’m ok – contented – enjoying the view.
Though now and again I look back. Don’t you?
