It was your prompts that triggered memories of old bush halls that are often all that’s left of small towns. It also brought to mind the monuments and in some cases scrolls of honour that still survive. This got me thinking about the devastating effects the war had on so many people, some small towns over here lost almost all their young men. I already had the idea for this poem at that first attempt a couple of years ago, and it was only your suggestion for this month’s homework that got me thinking about it again.
Even now I still get a sense of sadness when I see those old monuments.
