WAY TO GO – TO IVANHOE

“I’ve heard tell of Ivanhoe” he said “I read it long ago
written by Sir Walter Scott – my teacher told me so.
He fought a tournament for love and to win his fair maid
I remember as a little kid that game of knights we played.

They named a town for him you know in western New South Wales
its history is not well known but I can tell some tales;
Cobb and Co changed their horses there back 'round eighteen eighty four
and did so for very many years – how many I’m not sure.

The caught the Hatfield Bushrangers – out there near Ivanhoe.
Running wild and free they were. Black tracker spoiled their show.
He came from Clare, dab hand at tracking, though they shot PC Power
but the wallopers finally captured four – The Policemen’s finest hour.

The Indian Pacific passes through there – did you know?
On those cooler April mornings you often hear her whistle blow
as she travels out from Euabalong or out Menindee way
the Broken Hill Outback Xplorer stops there Monday and Tuesday.”

He gave an enigmatic smile and raised his glass to drink,
“it’s marvellous how just a word transports you – makes you think.
I’m not big on the quiet game – too many years alone
but I never fancied city streets – a bushman likes to roam.

To see mountains and valleys, feel the red dirt ‘neath his feet
and watch endless horizons where the sky and water meet.
I’ve been to Ivanhoe" he said "though many years ago
Might just make it my next stop – I’ve no other row to hoe.”

Great use of the prompts Maureen, a good read.
