homework week ending 14/11/11 Words on the go.

Post by Wendy Seddon » Thu Oct 27, 2011 7:23 am

I was thinking only yesterday
about the funny things we say,
further research left me agog,
our language is a travel log!

You’ve been misled by friend or foe,
then up the garden path you go!
You don’t comply, take a diff’rent tack,
you like it off the beaten track.

An annoying aunt or babbling friend
has totally driven you ‘round the bend!
And a personage you can’t recall
actually drove you up the wall!

When you’ve searched, no result at a frantic pace…
you’ve been sent on a wild goose chase.
If taking risks is your life’s dance…
then you fly by the seat of your pants.

When you’re ready to leave your abode,
you’ll be set to hit the frog ‘n’ toad.
You’re backed into a corner, ready to freak,
you’re without a paddle up the creek!

When you’re vague on purpose, shove can’t make push,
It’s clear you’re beating ‘round the bush.
This pie’s the tastiest in quite a while,
in fact it’s best by a country mile.

You’re over fifty, treated like a dill…
then you’re clearly old – you’re over the hill.
You’ve been deceived, you’ve hurt your pride,
then you’ve been taken for a ride.

So, come on you lot – your turn now,
please add to my little list,
take the time to make a rhyme…
I think you’ve got the gist.

Clever Wen - love the way you have amalgamated all the old sayings into it - could relate to the over 50 line. For some reason we seem to become invisible once we turn 50. Maybe people do think that age and grey hair equate to stupidity I don't know but they find out to their cost in a lot of instances the error of their ways.

I enjoyed your poem and thanks for contributing.

Cheers

Maureen

Good one Wendy. And I hope the bush poets notice that those old saying you have used, are in fact metaphors. The poets' vital ingredient in poetic recipes ( that's a metaphor too  )

Maureen and Neville, you are very kind.
I know the meter is terrible,
dashed it off in a couple of minutes.

Off to Morisset tomorrow with my daughter.
Should be fun (oh yeah, and poetically educational!)

Good one Wendy,
I was going to pluck up the courage and suggest the meter was a little wonky, but you have already pointed it out yourself,
A bit like my punctuation that's a little wonky as well.

Cheers Terry
