Homework Fortnight Ending 19/3/12 - The Limerick

The Limerick
© John Peel 9/3/2012

There once was a poet called Lear
who said, "Well now, what have we here?"
Two lines rhymed from my pen,
two more rhyming again -
it's the start of a Limerick, I fear!

I reckon now just to be sure,
this Limerick still needs one line more.
If I struggle and strive,
I'll rhyme one, two and five
with a different rhyme on three and four."

These poems will bring me great fame
and Limerick is such a good name!
Some of them will be rude
with some witty and crude -
though some may be boring and tame!

Thanks Neville and Heather

The first four lines had been floating around in my head for a long time and to finish it off with just a single line didn't seem to work, so I decided to give the challenge of "linked Limericks" a go. Roughly five years ago, I attended a poetry event at Trentham in Victoria (Part of the "Words in Winter" Festival that they have in that area) and I saw a gentleman read a poem that was made up of linked Limericks - I think it was about the antics of his family. It was quite cleverly done.

Limericks are really fun poems aren't they?

I would have to agree with you there Heather.

One of the first rhyming poems that I can remember writing was a Limerick. That was back when I was in year 5 at school as an eleven year old. It was called "Ben":

There once was a young boy called Ben,
who lived in a little chook pen.
He ate some chook food,
and thought it was good, (OK, so I used a sight rhyme here - I was only eleven but I had seen them often enough in other poems that I had read at the time)
so then he turned into a hen!
