‘Sams Way’

The Autumn leaves along Sams Way, such beauty to behold,
and travelling ‘round Mountain Lagoon therein they do unfold
in vibrancy of morning with fresh colours dazzling bright
to evenings tranquil, mellow shades at onset of twilight,
a landscape of splendour that needs no artificial props,
with eucalypts and paperbarks that form serene backdrops.
It’s Ten to Twelve acres the old Lagoon would roughly be,
and is a haven for birdlife, spectacular to see!
I was but Twelve years old, when sadly, old Sam passed away,
our treasured Grandfather, who, is remembered to this day
(in just one way of many) by this avenue of trees
there planted to his memory for posterity to please!
When helping with the planting I recall the young trees when
spaced Thirty feet apart, it seemed so distant way back then!
Now Sixty odd years on so many branch tips intertwine
creating walls of colour, that only nature could design!
By family, friends and neighbours he was held in high esteem,
along with Minnie, his soulmate, they made a solid team
for lucky Grandkids growing up, we look back on that time
with fondness and endearment that for us was just sublime!
His words; ‘you plant a garden, for, generations ahead’
indeed were profound, and when I think of the old homestead,
with visions, of him in the garden with his rolled up sleeves
he will, forever be with us …in those stunning Autumn leaves!
