Re: Have We Lost Site Visitors?

Not sure if this is relevant to this site or not as I am no IT guru as you know but was told by a fellow I worked with who was very much into this kind of thing that key words in any article could show up as a hit simply because they came up on the Google screen if someone keyed in a word that was contained within that article. I don't mean common words like and or thatl but for arguments sake if you keyed in Parraburdoo in Google then it would show somewhere there the link to the poem here on ABPA "Red Dog from Parraburdoo" and that would appear to us to be that somebody had gone and read it, when in actual fact that was not the case.

Perhaps a more accurate record would be that once a person has looked at a piece of work - regardless of how many times they go back to relook or read comments that their viewing is not counted again - that is not the case at the moment as I understand it and even as the author of a piece each time you go to maybe correct or see comments it also comes up as a hit - that alone IMO is giving a very false reading. However whether that can be arranged or not I have no idea.

I can't believe none of you mob commented and only 15 read that first ... take note FIRST post that went up on the new site...now I am shattered and feeling fragile. I might have to go and read it a few dozen times myself to make it look at least respectable.

Cheers

Thanks for that Mausie, makes sense. So our 'hit' counters are accurate ...

Thanks Maureen & Manfred,
As I said I wasn't being critical just curious.
I mentioned earlier about my first posted poem having well over 1000 hits before the page changed, well one of Maureen's was neck & neck all the way, (sorry can't remember what one Maureen). there were many others that had hundreds of hits and there may well have been others with more than either Maureen Or I, I couldn't believe it, My poem was called 'Out On The Western Shaw'

Off in a couple of hours, taking a mate down to the opening of the trout season (party tonight) fish tomorrow.

Hi Guys & Gals.....

I use several other forums and the entire contents is open to read but only registered members can leave comments. To me that makes sense. Not everybody wants to give details to a stranger not knowing how they will be stored or used. The Stamp Board that I use has 6780 members and the most on at the same time were 263 (http://www.stampboards.com). This is based in Australia and uses the same engine as what is used here.

To me (personal opinion) what would make most sense is to have all forums open for general viewing but only members able to make comments. There should be a members only section for chit chat that is not available to the general public. The other boards generate a huge amount of traffic from google searches but let's be realistic here, the bigger the board, the more traffic the more work for the behind the scenes people. Manfred in particular would have a much bigger work load rejecting would be scammers and protecting the site from hacking. The moderators would be similarly affected as there would potentially be more to police.

You only have to look at the news to see corporations getting hacked regularly. These companies employ full time staff to design and protect their networks and they still fall foul of intruders. There is no way that we can expect volunteers to put in the amount of time that would be needed to protect the site it is simply an unfair ask.

I can't write poetry but I do enjoy reading it and I wouldn't have bothered registering here had I not been on the old site previously. There needs to be an easier way to access the poetry for "browsers" and then I think we would generate more members because they could see that it was worth while. Currently the "public" exposure is too limited. People are weary of supplying personal details unless they see that it will be of benefit. We need to show those people that fly past a benefit. People will often not return to a site if they have seen it once and it didn't grab there interest. The number of web sites now is a number that I can't pronounce. We are but one small krill in an ocean.
