... get a bit creative, play with words, push the sounds and have a bit of fun, we've got a great palette of language to choose from so there is no need to look for the obvious and predictable.

There's ALWAYS a another (sometimes better) way to say something.
I think sometimes we forget we're "Wordsmiths".

sanctuary - sang/sank during

If we go with the assumption that sanctuary is 4 syllables, the rhyme doesn't have to be a four syllable word, what about two x two syllable words ...
pretty fairy
Donald's dairy

or three x one or two syllable words ...
big and hairy
lamb called Mary
oh so scary

... not meaning that any of the above would suit your poem, I'm just showing that you can use two or three words together to rhyme with a four syllable word.

If you want sanctuary to be 3 syllables, I think it would be /-- not /-/ as far as stressed syllables go, as we would say SANC-tu-ry not SANC-tu-RY.

I reckon that if it's getting too tricky, you'd be better off rearranging that line or finding a different word. :|

As Neil said....

There's another option, do blank verse. ;)
