MUM

When I woke up this morning something clicked in my mind and I realised that it was Mum's birthday.
The 10th May 1911 was her birthdate. She would have been a hundred today.
Mum died about eighteen years ago.
My mothers maiden name was Gallagher.
In true Irish fashion she bore a few nicknames.
Her surname had many different ways of pronunciation.
The older ancestors pronounced it as Gollerah, some called it Galligah, as well as Gollaher.
Hence Mum was called 'Goll' and as she grew older was known as 'Old Goll'.
Her maternal family, the Reids, called her Todd. I don't know where that one came from.

G'day Joe,

In my pirmary school days our local priest was always called Father Gal-i-gah but the correct pronunciation, I have been told, is Gal-a-her. He officiated at both my parents funeral. In spite of having lived in Australia for round 50 years he never lost his Irish accent. All the Italians at the funerals couldn't understand a word.

Growing up we had a neighbour whose name was Mrs. Flaherty. Everyone called her Mrs. Flarty and she never corrected us. It was years before I even realised what her real name was. I never saw it written down as a kid.

Reading your signature Leonie, reminds me of my father, Bill.
He "always used salt to kill the pepper".
One of his favourite sayings.

G'day Dave and Mrs Smith,
I can't say I've ever heard of this bloke. I guess over the last 200 years they must have covered a lot of ground and settled in a lot of different regions.
If, as you say, he looks like my avatar, and doesn't owe you any money, I'll accept him as relation.

Joe.
