JOE or FRANK

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but feel that I must explain why there is Frank and why there is a Joe.
I was christened Francis Joseph Daniel. How's that for a tykes name?
Dad called me Frank and Mum called me Joe.
My brother was born two years later and was christened Thomas James Daniel. (still a bit tykey)
Dad called him Tom and Mum called him Jim.
Three years later a sister was born and christened Maria Anne. (More tyke here)
All the relations called her Sal. (not so tykey?) Q. Zondrae. Was there ever a Saint Sal?

Consequently everyone thought that there were four boys in the family, Frank, Joe, Tom and Jim.
Occasionally we got an 'ie' tacked onto our names, becoming Frankie, Tommy and Jimmie.
Joe never got an 'ie'. We were all competent horsemen.
My first wifes name was Leone, and we called her Kate. She is a marvellous horsewoman. One of the Cochrane's from Candelo.
Our son was Michael - and still is. He's too big to call names or argue with.
Our daughter was named Catherine and still is. She's a great horsewoman.
My second partner's name is or was (however you go about it) Kerry.
We call her Curly. She used to go on harness drives with me years ago.
She's an excellent housekeeper, mother and now Grandmother.
She had a son named Kane who was known as "Cactus". He was good footballer and is married to Jody.
Kerry and I have a daughter named Lucy Anna Daniel (LAD) who is known far and wide as Lulu or Lad. Lucy is an excellent rider too.
Her impending birth had the town humming for a long time. When Kerry had a kaleidascope ?, vasectomy ?? or whatever that photograph thing is called, the doctor told her she was having a little boy. In the photograph he said the baby had his right hand up in the air and looked like he was going to be another Bullrider.
So all the town was rejoicing on the coming of a new JACK DANIEL.
I've also got a Granddaughter (Kane and Jody's) named Lilly. She will be two years soon. She already rides a pee-wee honda with trainer wheels.
Catherine has a son and daughter - Joshua and Anna and two second-hand grandkids Emma and Ella.
They can all ride like the dickens.

I just love my mob, still call them my own, and am proud of them all.
And just a bit about myself. I rode buckjumpers and bulls at rodeo's for seventeen years and was never thrown once in all that time. However I will admit to falling off a few.

If there is anything else you want to know, just let me know and I'll make something up. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Joe

I can understand why people would get confused Frank / Joe .

Nicknames are a part of our Australian way of life and most of us collect a few over the years.

I come from a family of eight kids so as you can imagine the fur was always flying.

A good read mate thanks.

Never thrown     a good one.

To avoid any derivations, extensions or nick names I will just say,
'Morning all,

I was Baptised: Dorraine Zondrae Anne Della Bona. The surname being two words, two capitals, no hyphen. Try repeating this every time you need to give your full name! As the 'Anna' did not make it to the Birth Certificate (only added for a Saints name in church) it was quickly forgotten. But still all the rest is a mouthful for a kid. Come Confirmation you get to pick a patron of choice. I chose 'Patricia' the female of Patrick. Then later I was married. Now that makes the whole thing (take a breath) Dorraine Zondrae Anne Patricia Della Bona King.
Do you blame me for deed polling it to Zondrae King?
But as long as they (or you) get the 'Zondrae' right I'm happy - and I ignore any attempt to shorten it. I would have just that one word name if modern computers would not blow a 'whatsit' (well they don't exactly have fuses, do they?) and government departments just will not accept a one word name. The closest they will accept is Zondrae Zondrae and that would sound silly. So with respect, honour and pride I wear my husbands surname.

What great stories - love reading about things like this - it really adds depth to peoples personalities.

You just must be so proud Joe of your mob - and all great riders - what an accomplishment, and laughed at the confusion all the names must have caused to neighbours and townsfolk - huge family each known by two or more names.

It's not just Australians who do the nickname bit either. My Mums maiden name was Jacklin. Dad always called her Jacky . Her sister is Desiree her husband also called her Jacky, my sister is Jacqueline and she gets called 'Skin'. My Brother is in a medieval group and goes under the title Baron Master Hrothgar Breaksword: but he is 6'7' so he was nicknamed 'Lofty' in the RAAF, and my son gets called 'Dog' ever since his school days and that had nothing to do with his Mothers predilections. I just get Mauzie :( Dad always reckoned you could call him what you liked as long as you didn't call him late for dinner

Wot's in a name, someone said. I had a couple of friends through school and teenager years who used their middle names instead of their first names so had figured out the Frank/Joe thing. Strangely almost no one shortens my name, not that it would bother me particularly if they did. Most other Leonie's that I have come across have had their names shortened to Lee.

Zondrae it's interesting that you say you would go with just the one name if possible because I always think of you with just the one name - like Elvis. 8-) 8-) Oh ok, I know he had two but if you mention Elvis, no one is going to say 'Elvis who?' although Adam went to school with one so we sometimes did back then. He was a twin and his twin brother's name was Jesse. Reckon Mum was a fan much?

Thank you all for reading my post.
I like to entertain as best I can, with my motto being 'only half the lies I tell are the truth!
My brother Jimmie used to train a team of polo ponies for the Darmody family at Bungendore when he was fifteen. He used to start work at 6.30am and they were powerful, hard fed and hard going horses.
Early one cold and frosty morning, George Rowley and a car load of shearers were passing Darmody's place and spotted Jimmie hard at work, exercising the horses.
He didn't know who the young rider was and on the weekend commented to Dad!
" By the cripes Billie, I don't know who he is but that kid working for Jimmie Darmody can ride!
When we went past the other day we saw him coming down the paddock riding one and leading three.
The one he was riding was six foot off the ground and had his head between his legs and was kicking up a helluva storm while the other three were all kicking and bucking like the devil. The kid was riding one handed in one of those little pommie show saddles and dragging on the others with his free hand. He never looked like coming a gutser!
I've never seen anything like it! By Hell I haven't".
Rowley was an old mountain horseman of note, well respected for his ability with wild horses.
Dad, as proud as punch, just said yair and chuckled to himself.
Jimmie was also the recipient of the Dudley Cup Award for the best turned out team of horses at the Sydney Show and again at Warwick Farm that year. (1959)

Joe. (a proud brother)

Well Francis Joseph Those are both good old names but I bet now from your mob ya gets POP, Then that would make us kindred spirits (kind of) as I am POP but mostly just “Yeah sure Pop sure”

Re the photo Catherine Daniel is Foxy.

My Name is David Stuart Chessher Smith the Chessher being My Mums Maiden name, Dad said “Well he has Welsh, Scots and English in his name but no Irish” so he just called me Kelly.

Bob I am the middle of 9 kids to little to be with the big’uns but king of the kids.

Dorraine Zondrae Anne Patricia Della Bona King. I bet you never mixed up the second last two names “Bella Dona” but I guess you got that all your life “sorry,” you say you tried to have just Zondrae I just think of you as Zondrae the lady that writes good poetry, If I get invited to do some poetry at a dinner I always recite “Mrs Mickys Menus” I usually wait till the eating is all done.

I have lots of work I need to be doing outside (5 weeks in Qld and the jobs get away on ya) but it’s raining so I think I’ll just go back to bed, Her indoors is away with the girls at a craft show won’t be home till tea time.

TTFN 8-)

Hey Joe ya got that one in while I was out in word typing.
