Be a good sport Zondrae

When I read Zondrae's comment objecting to a discussion of football, I thought about it while doing the washing up ( yes girls I know my duty )

Bush poetry is about Australian themes. And like it or not, sport is an enduring interest of the Australian psyche; and Australian poetry including bush poetry has, for a long time, reflected this.

Banjo Paterson wrote of The Geebung Polo Club and also a number of verses about horse racing. C.J. Dennis wrote verses about horse racing and gambling.
And there's Thomas E. Spencer's How McDougal Topped the Score ( cricket ), Francis Webb's The Runner ( athletics ) Bruce Dawe's Life Cycle for Big Jim Phelan ( Australian Rules Football ) Jim Haynes did one about the 2000 Olympics I think it's called
I'll be an Olympic Hero. I suppose there's more.

I'm not a great sports fan Zondrae but I think sport has to be a legitimate theme for bush poetry because it is such an ingrained part of the Australian experience.
At least football games only last for an hour or so. Cricket goes all day, day after day. on and on and on....sob

Thats what I said in a much nicer kind of way Marty. There are always going to be subjects that some of us do not like with such a varied number of members.

I just have a quick click and move on if the subject does not interest me.

easy really.

G'day fellas,

I'm glad to see you have taken my jibe to heart.

I am not against all sport, - only the ones that demand rough contact.

I like to watch games that are conducted in a spirit of sportsmanship. Cricket, for example, in all it's forms is very entertaining. Any of the Olympic contests are worth a little of my time. I had written a better response that this but my mouse ate it.

There was a contest to find which sport produced the finest athlete, there were representatives of various sports matched over a series of tests of skill and strength. do you recall who won?? it was a dancer.

I knew you were only teasing Zondrae ;) but it's an interesting topic to give some thought to for bush poetry.

I know what you are talking about with the dancer, :) The man who was found to be the fittest, strongest most agile athlete was a ballet dancer yes it's a true story Zondrae, you're quite correct. And he had to lift a grown woman off the ground while prancing around the stage. beats the wife-carrying champion any day.

I'm trying to imagine Marty Boyce and Dave Smith doing the pas de deux   sorry blokes, just kidding

Not gonna fall fall for the old footy is not sport jibe. Imagine if I started on about religious nuts and radical religions like Catholics or Muslims carrying on seeking attention for their imaginary friends, you reckon I'd get a bite? Na, I'll leave this niggle alone and go and watch the footy. Go Sharks!!!
