LIVE EXPORT OF OUR CATTLE TO INDONESIA

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Tue May 31, 2011 6:05 pm

If any of your were as saddened and sickened as I was by the story on our live cattle exports please, please take the time to complete and send this petition to our Governments.

The footage on Bill, Brian, Tommy and Arthur is graphic and extremely upsetting so if you can't handle it don't watch it, but please do send the link on to as many family and friends as you can and urge them to send the letter or write your own if you desire - the facility to do so is here.

I am ashamed and sickened to think that Australians have allowed this to happen - and heartbroken to think that any of our stock may have met this fate

Thanking you all in anticipation of your assistance.

Even though this is a step in the right direction the pressure still needs to be kept on the Government to remedy this situation - please do still sign and send the petition

The Federal Government has temporarily banned live exports of Australian cattle to the Indonesian abattoirs identified in the program.

Mark Goodman, who's the production manager and meat inspector at KJ Halal Meats at Nyngan, said " quite frankly you wouldn't find any abattoirs like this in Australia, I'll give you the tip now." Mr Goodman says Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) must take responsibility for the mistreatment of the cattle. He says he has been in the industry for 36 years and never seen anything so barbaric."There's been 10 years, a hell of a lot of tax payers money wasted and producers levies and abattoir levies all gone to this but at the end of the day what have we got for our money?" he said.

The Chairman of Meat and Livestock Australia, Don Heatley, says the industry fully accepts there is much more work to do in Indonesia, and the treatment depicted in the footage will not be tolerated.

Maureen the news today was great. The only thing I did not agree with was giving the animals featured in the videos names. I myself, think this cheapens the argument as the footage was confronting enough on its own merit.

Bad things happen when good folk do nothing.

Simplistic? I totally agree - the simple things are often the best, more reaction from Australian people has been generated from this and a quicker Govt action than years of wrangling and money spent trying to get standards over there up to par.

To create a reaction you have to take an action so it was a good marketing ploy that worked...the end results will speak for themselves. Put a name on anything and people will take ownership of it and recognize the name...A high percentage of Australians today are talking and acting on Bills story and that is the whole point. Bill, Brian, Tommy and Arthur are now faces in a crowd.....they didn't have names when they left our shores but now they do and who can ever forget the heartrending cry of 'WHY'

Cheapen? How can anything that draws attention to cruelty and unnecessary suffering with an aim to stopping it, cheapen it? The only thing that cheapens it is to ignore it or pretend it isn't happening, to turn your back and walk away - saying 'someone/they need to do something about that'. The 'someone/they' is us we are The Voice.

We have the chance to turn the pages over
We can write what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet, before we get much older

This time, we know we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing we can make it better

Without naming the cattle it would be just another cow story - horrendous but as in the past soon conveniently forgotten or at least pushed into the background as too horrible - but it is not so easy to forget Bill, Brian, Tommy and Arthur.

Sadly true - All the more reason to sign the petition or write the letter now before the issue dies down - wouldn't you agree?
