Hey, just for something that has never been seen on this site before, have a look at this - our new chookies are finally starting to lay. These eggs look like our family - tall skinny Daddy egg, short fat round Mummy egg and three perfect little daughter eggs!

That's called " Installation Art " wonderful Kym. Perhaps you could auction it on line for a considerable sum to a discerning collector.

It is an old farmers tale that those long eggs (if firtile) hatch as roosters. My new chicken, we raised in summer has been laying well but still small eggs. I can tell which hen lays which egg. I have 3 red hens who lay (at the moment) every day.

The older two are only the season before's hatching. One went broody so we let her sit on some round white stones we borrowed from a friends garden and after a week bought two day old chickens and switched them for the stones in the dark of night. She took them and raised them. Trouble was that the black one, when 25 weeks old, started to crow. So he went in the slow cooker. The other one started laying about two weeks later. The eggs we produce are too many for just the two of us and we sell the excess.

Our original chook, a white one, (Milly) is now about three years old, or maybe a little older and still producing well. We gave her to our daughter.

Ya know if you mix all of them with milk and then zap them in the microwave for two minutes they would taste really nice.


Chickens are amazeing creatures. I used to keep one out of every hatching as a pet and they take very well to sitting in front of the tv.


The two I have now sit at the back door every moring with the dogs waiting for a feed and will even fight the dogs for their tucker if allowed.

Installation Art, hey Neville? Wow, I didn't know I was so artistic! I thought they were just a funny collection of a strangely-shaped set of eggs.

Zondrae, I have a weird and wonderful collection of chooks. My daughter and I went to a chook auction and I bought a few different breeds, just to have a cute collection. I now have one large Barnevelda (black with brown arrows on her feathers - we think she lays the big ol' fat brown eggs), two silver spangled lacewings (white chooks with black dots) and one small black bullet of a thing with white dots - dunno wot she is but holy bejeezus, she's fast! We call her Africa. We suspect it's her who lays the long eggs, kinda shoots 'em out quick like, cos she's always on the run.

I also bought laying hens as day old chicks, and I have to say they are much calmer, friendlier chooks. The others are pretty, but get in a flap easily.

And I also bought four baby guineas for Mr Guinea. He's such a lovely mother!

Oh Kym you are lucky I love Spangled Lacewings and always wanted to have Plymouth Rocks but just ended up with Rhode Island Reds but they were great layers and always brown eggs which I love. My new young neighbour now has 3 Isa browns...Julia, Penny and Lacey and they keep my girls fascinated for hours.

Zondrae I too was told that the longer eggs were the roosters/boy eggs but never knew if it was true or not - if it were it would be an easy way of sexing prior to hatching because they are quite distinctive.
