An observation

Post by Irene » Tue Sep 06, 2011 12:30 am

Can I make an observation without sounding like a killjoy?
While it is great to have the old poetry bought to the top of the lists, I am finding that I doing two things:
1. I am opening topics and discovering that I have already read them ('cause I don't remember topic titles well!) and are therefore falsely inflating the 'views' of each topic I open
2. I am missing some of the new topics because I have limited time in which to browse, and after opening a few and finding I have already read them, I log out because I don't have time to keep looking through them to find ones I haven't read.
It isn't that I don't like or appreciate the poems that are being bought forward - I certainly do!! It's just that I also like to read the new poems, but find it is just a little too hard at present with so many being bought forward.

This is just my observation, but wondered if others were finding the same. I don't want to offend anyone with my comments - I love to re-read poems when I have the time to do so, but find I would prefer to browse back on them at my leisure - and do so from time to time.
Perhaps there is an easy way to know which are new posts and which are older?

If I'm speaking out of turn, please just tell me to belt up!!!

IRene you are the sweetest, gentlest, kindest, nicest person, and if anyone tells you to belt up, I reckon THEY need to belt up!!!

As to how to resolve your problem, I don't know an answer, sorry ...

I for one don't find it a problem. A quick flick and I'm gone, not really concerned about the number of posts just take a sec to look and of late have found poems that I really did not fully read before.

Just how old is old. With new members coming on line all the time i think it is a good idea.

It's that little jiggle thingies on your screen hey Kym.

Irene- Belt up

Since I was the one who did that I'll tell you why and it isn't something that I planned to do every week anyway. I just happened to notice going back over all the posts as I also occasionally browse through them that a lot of good poems seem to have been well and truly overlooked with less than 20 hits on them and quite often with not a comment to bless themselves with , which IMO would have been most disheartening to those who took the time to post them....maybe at heart I am just fragile and insecure :( .

We all know that some poems just don't fly and that is fair enough, no one is going to argue about that - but for a poem to not even receive a comment of some description seemed a bit harsh....once again my opinion only but if the writer was new to the site or relatively new that could be enough to put them right off. I also considered that Mannie was opening up the site for viewing and so thought to give these a bit of airplay.

Anyway Mannie started it commenting on the first poem to lodged on this site and how no one had commented on it so blame him.

Anyway just so as you know that was my criteria - less than 20 lookers and no takers - and you go back into the sale ring
after a decent interval - how else do you expect to sell the pony ;)

Cheers

Maureen

The old ABPA Forum had 183 members (15% activly posting) Ric's site is about the same, and this site has 103 members with 30% actively posting ... I'm yet to be convinced that multiple 'hits' equate to a greater membership.
As part of the upgrade, we will be adding some code to determine the 'where from' and the 'why' so we can target (or exclude) the browsing (sic) Public.

Given the amount of personal info on a couple of our Forums, ONLY Registered Forum Members will have access to "General Poetry Discussion" and "General Chit-Chat and Off Topic"

These two Forums are NOT accessable or viewable by the browsing Public.
If the Forum had been left in it's initial state with no filters for membership, we would have over 10,000 (yes, ten thousand) members by now.

I'm trying to justify my paranoia here ...

Manfred your paranoia is what keeps this forum neat and tidy for us mere mortals to read and enjoy at our leisure, I am sorry it cost you much of your time but your effort, skill and ability to hear what everyone is saying are very much appreciated.

Irene I also get bogged down re-reading posts so when I have limited time I just click on “Unread posts” and have a quick browse.

Hi Irene,
I'm a bit like you but often pop in several times a day but usually only for a minute or so each time, which means I don't always have time to read many poems, but sometimes follow a thread on something that interests me. I haven't really had any problems but this is probably because I only occasionally have time to read more than a poem or two on an occasional visit.
Maureen makes a good point in that we should always try to make sure every poem gets a comment or two.

Yes, I agree with Maureen. It's sad when a poem doesn't even get one reply. I know from personal experience how disheartening it is! We should all try to make an effort to be more encouraging, especially towards new members, so we don't lose them because of lack of replies and interest in their work.

;)

Thanks Terry and Kym because that is what basically sent me off on a mission and if I don't forget to remember I will go again in a few months time looking for lost strayed poems that have wandered off into the wilderness and sit crying and mewling softly to themselves, unloved and rejected  with no one noticing that they have gone

Footballl came on, so I got up to get myself a snack
You should've seen what was goin' on by the time that I got back
Down in the old abandoned vault, Zondrae was havin' fits
That villain said, "Give me the deed to your ranch
Or I'll blow you all to bits!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He lit the fuse to the dynamite (and then, and then...!)

My apologies to Along came Jones but see what you could be missing out on

Sometimes it is better to say nothing if you do not have something good to say.

Not one of my traits.
