Lightning Bolt.
I've seen many a shooting star
I've seen a flying, racing colt
but today I've witnessed history
I've just watched a lightning bolt !

G'day Bob,
no reflection on you but..
1. Arrogance + 2. Sport = Blaaath as far as I am concerned.
Why don't we have a Cultural Olympics? with gold medals for the best poem written in 5 minutes to a topic drawn on the spot, or the best poem with R&M written in 10 minutes. Or the best poem written on the spot featuring alliteration or other writing tools that are drawn out of a hat at the time of the contest?
And don't tell me that you can't write on command, or that you can't train for such events, both the not too distant event put on by Hunter Valley (Carol Heuchan and friends) and what Illawarra Breakfast Poets do regularly, prove it can be done. I would prefer to spend time with a person who has the intelligence of a poet than a very highly trained athlete. Mind you there must by the occasional elite athlete who also has a brain (and is not totally self absorbed).
Having said all this I am looking forward to seeing some of the gymnastics.

someone is beaming in on your thoughts Zondrae

Here in the U.S., Morning Edition on National Public Radio is reviving the connection between the Olympics and poetry in its own Poetry Games—they’ve asked five poets from around the world to contribute poems celebrating the Olympics, and now they are asking their listening audience to vote for the victor.

Re: Lightning Bolt.
Usain Bolt runs at 31mph which is pretty decent, but if he hits a child there's a 40% chance they'll die.
DangerMan!! I seem to remember this arrogance being a necessary trait in being a superior 100m runner, back even further than Carl Lewis. It's the Holywood show of Athletics and humble men get outmuscled and run over. It's a track equivalent of Heavyweight Boxing, complete with egos. Personally, I'd never have it any other way, which is why I love Bob's Poem.
And by the way, when I watched the race in slow motion, I realised that I could run that fast WITHOUT pulling all the weird faces!!!
Cheers and Silver

Talk the talk Keats and Walk the Walk.
Some show arrogance and self belief while others are just plain rude.
