HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIAM

Happy Birthday William.... Shakespeare that is. Born on 23rd April 1564, 450 years ago. Interestingly died on the same date 52 years later, 23rd of April, 1616.

Shakespeare has had the most profound influence on English literature and language. Even bush poetry; I can think of one example straight off, C.J. Dennis's satire on Romeo and Juliet, called The Play. I am certain that Henry Lawson and Banjo had their voice shaped by poetic language that came from a tradition going back to Shakespeare. You can see it in Henry's, Men they might have Been and Banjo's Travelling Post Office.
