Post by tom mcilveen » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:08 pm

what about using a single syllable 'ee' word with preceding words...e.g. ' in a tree' to rhyme with 'sanctuary' ...is this considered a perfect rhyme ???

Tom I am still learning but I do know that in the word sanctuary the stress falls on sangk- choor - ree (Aust. Oxford Dictionary)

Others, such as John Peel who have a lot more experience should be able to give examples.

I can't think of anything that you would consider a perfect rhyme - then to depends on what you are writing about

Best I could do (sorry) was Cassowary or something perhaps with marry or similar on the end

eg

And so he searched for sanctuary - a place where he could safely tarry????

Cheers

Ummm, I would have thought that sanctuary is four syllables, not three sanc-tu-ar-y not sanc-tu-ry. It's one of those wonderful words that we Aussies tend to shorten. I guess the "proper" way would be four syllables, even though in everyday speech, we may say these words as three syllables. Heather's dictionary reckons 3 - my Americal College Dictionary says 4 - my Macquarie says 3 or 4! Take your pick!

Rhymes could include: adversary, aviary, cemetery, commentary, culinary, customary, dictionary, dietary, dignitary, dromedary, February, honourary, January, legendary, literary, mercenary, military, missionary, momentary, mortuary, necessary, ordinary, planetary, sanitary, secondary, secretary, sedentary, solitary, stationary, temporary, visionary, voluntary.

It's one of those 50/50 debates - half will agree with 3 and half will agree with 4.

Just what I reckon ... you are welcome to disagree ...

Tom. Kym has given pretty well all that I can find but I think if maybe you post the section of the poem you are looking at we could help some more and make some suggestions. There is not a problem here as we all know the final say is yours.

G'day Tom

It all comes down to which pronunciation of sanctuary that you are using. The Macquarie dictionary gives two accepted pronunciations (I have used bold to show the primary stress):

sanct-sher-ee
sanct-shu-air-ee

In the first case, my rhyming dictionary does not give a perfect triple rhyme for sanctuary. But, if the final syllable is looked at as stressed (as you would find in iambic metre), you could look for a suitable single syllable rhyme:

He found his sanctuary
in a very tall gum tree

My rhyming dictionary looks at history as an example (pronounced as hist-or-ee) of a single syllable rhyme with tree. You should note however that some judges would not look favourably on this type of rhyming since the 'ee' sound at the end of history is not normally stressed in regular speech (it is the same situation with sanctuary in this instance).

In the second case, my rhyming dictionary notes some of the following words as rhymes with sanctuary:
January, February, mortuary, dictionary.

These are double rhymes, it is the "air-ee" part at the end that is considered the rhyme in this case (and once again, it comes down to what the preferred pronunciations of these other words are as to whether or not someone considers them rhymes).

The other question that you might need to ask is this: is sanctuary the word that fits being the rhyme the best? If there is another way of saying what needs to be said but without sanctuary as the rhyming word and without inverting the phrases (this is also frowned upon), you might be better off doing that instead.

The other option is to consult a thesaurus and to replace sanctuary with a suitable synonym and you might get a better rhyming word that way also.

Regards

You could always use a different word than sanctuary. One that's easier to rhyme with like camouflage, then you could rhyme it with ap....no, hang on quai......no wait, ummm.....thes.......no......I'll get back to you!

My favourite colours camouflage – no one sees me in my garage
I wear it there so I go missing – don’t wish to mow I’m going fishingI
