In a Mothers Heart
In these days of so many blended families, it is extremely sad when a relationship breaks up and the step-parent faces losing contact with a child he/she had cared for as their own.
What is just as sad is the grand-parents and other family members who may also lose contact with a child and son/daughter in law that they have come to love, even though they have no blood ties to them.
Although this is written from a (Grand)mothers angle, it is written for anyone in that position - as an acknowledgement of the love that stays within their hearts.

In her heart there burns a tiny flame that’s there forever more.
Once it flourished in the light of day ‘til sorrow shut it’s door,
and it’s burning for a family she loved as if her own;
who will never be forgotten now the seeds of love are sown.
Six long years of happy memories and joy are left behind
but the paths of those we love and lose forever are entwined.
Just because they’ve left her life, it doesn’t mean they’ve left her heart
and she’ll cherish all the good times that her memories impart.
Days of families together filled with fun and laughter shared;
hugs and kisses from a special girl for whom she really cared;
nights beneath the starry skies enjoying friendships as a group,
sharing drinks and telling stories until eyes began to droop.
There were days spent at the ocean in the warmth of summer sun;
dogs and kids, and people skiing – families just having fun;
days canoeing in the river, laughter ringing through the air;
now those good times are no more it doesn’t mean she cannot care.
Still she feels the warmth of sharing as a family with pride,
and the sorrow that she couldn’t help a family who cried.
And she knows the hurt must take its course, but daily does she pray
that the friendships that they once all shared, they’ll share again one day.
But they’ll always be her family just as they were back then
tho’ the good times that have bought such joy may not be shared again.
Watching sadly as her daughter’s life and theirs are torn apart
there’s a silent tear escaping from a mother’s loving heart.

G'day, Irene.
Apart from the sentiment in your poem; which is wonderful.
Your poem has a good beat: meter.
Regards,
John

G/day Irene,
A thought provoking poem about a situation so common to-day, you wonder where it will all end don't you.
beautifully written as always.

I think you are right Irene, the meaning of life is...relationships.

Re: In a Mothers Heart
Thanks everyone
I find it very sad for everyone, but particularly for the children.
How hard it must be for some of these children to form close relationships if they love and lose a couple of times in their childhood - it can make them wary of getting too close next time.

Re: In a Mothers Heart
I never knew my mother's father's family as he died when she was very young.
I made it a mission to research the family and now have a 800 page book of memories.
Enjoyed the read Irene.
