Dunno about that Stephen. There's a couple of places I know of where painting and poetry intersect.

William Blake published his poems illustrated by his own pictures. he also did pictures to illustrate Dante's Divine Comedy. ( I think from memory )

The Art Gallery at Newcastle had an exhibition once where they put out some of their most significant works from the collection and invited poets to write a poem about each. The poems were displayed next to the paintings. Mostly modernistic stuff.


At Tenterfield (around the same time as the Bards of the Bush Poetry comp) there is a competition called Brush with Verse in which entrants are invited to submit paintings with a poem attached. Again modernism carries the day here.

I have thought from time to time that it might be a good project to have an ehibition of Australian bush theme paintings with bush poetry joined in, either as performance or witten to be displayed relating directly to specific pictures. Maybe as a comp maybe as only exhibition. That hasn't got past the stage of the germ of an idea.

C. J. Dennis did the illustrations for his 'Book for Kids'. Didn't do a bad job, either, though his regular illustrator, Hal Gye, was a bit cheesed off.

I think it should be more than a germ of an idea - why not draw on the people who favour both of these art forms and extend our coverage. The painters and art afficiondas get to appreciate the bush poetry and the bush poets get to appreciate and relate to the art. Win win situation all round I would have thought...and double the numbers in attendance

does one have to be untalented to pound the beat. A workmate of mine from way back, the late Ben Acton was interested in poetry and music, he wrote a big hit surfie song; Hangin' Five. He didn't manage any other good songs though

I hope it might get going one day Maureen. I doubt that it will be done by me, I'm too old and redundant, and my time is already booked for the foreseeable future.
