We Proudly Call You Mother

Post by Irene » Sun May 01, 2011 11:48 pm

With Mother's day coming up soon, I thought I would post an old poem of mine - it was on the site that we lost!!
I wrote this poem for my daughter who, for six years, was a 'Mother' to her partners little girl every second weekend, and on holidays, though she had no children of her own. It is also for all those women and men who take on a parent role to their partners children - again, particularly when they have no children of their own. Not many people consider them 'parents'.

You carry them through pregnancy until you give them birth;
it is the greatest miracle upon this planet earth.
You guide them on their pathway and you build their sense of worth,
so we proudly call you ‘Mother’.

Your life revolves around them and you worry when they’re ill;
no matter if they’re naughty, for they know you’ll love them still.
There’s many quick to judge you on your disciplining skill,
and you tell them you're their mother.

They grow into the adults that you’ve guided them to be;
their sense of worth is moulded by the things they do and see.
You shepherd them to adulthood, and then you set them free
and you’re proud to be their mother.

You’ve had no children of your own, but then you meet a Dad;
You open up your heart to him, and any kids he’s had.
You love them through the good times, and you love them through the bad
only no one calls you ‘Mother’.

You work around the access, and you’d never put them last;
you’ve never been a mother, but you’re learning pretty fast.
Your days of single living are a relic of the past
now you’re sort of like a mother.

You give them something special when you love them as your own;
a place within their hearts that they’ll remember when they’re grown;
the love you give so freely and the guidance you have shown,
and we proudly call you ‘Mother’.
What goes around, comes around.

G/day Irene,
I remember this from before, a very touching poem, and so timely as you say with Mothers day coming up.

cheers Terry
