Do You Think Of Me

Post by Zondrae » Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:59 am

This poem was written in response to a judges comment "Where are all the love Poems"?. It was my birthday, (gosh 5 years ago) so I shut the door and thought. 'I'll give 'em a love poem!'. It did however undergo several rewrites and hours of polishing to get to this stage. I consulted our mother hen, Glenny and she helped me sort out the last bit of the rhyming pattern. Never the less it is still almost as it was first written. Only a few words have changed to assist with the internal rhyme.

It was given Highly Commended in the recent Cervantes comp. I won't be putting it in any more comps.

Do You Think Of Me?
© Zondrae King (09/05) Corrimal

At dawn, when all the waving beds of meadow grasses bow their heads
releasing heavy burdens of the dew,
do morning dreams transport you back to times when we were one?
The days were long and warm but they were few.

And when the gentle warmth of day has wiped the tears of dew away
and lofty spears of green salute the sun,
do you recall the hours we lay there, looking at the sky,
just counting cloudy patterns one by one?

At noon, when even birds seek shade from blazing sun in leafy glade
while endless heat is falling on the earth,
do you think twice of idle days we sat beside the lake?
We counted not the cost but more the worth.

Our fingers made a lovers knot as time and trouble, we forgot.
No sound could break the magic of the day.
We found the only world we wanted in each others eyes
not needing words to chase the peace away.

Then when the gentle evening brings a momentary pause that sings,
a melody of unfragmented still,
do you find sometimes that you halt, recalling distant nights,
when I would follow, gladly, at your will?

And do you stop to find the hush concealed beyond the work days rush
and search for me within the madding crowd.
Then catch a glimpse that could be me, prepare with silent breath,
in case you need to call my name aloud.

Do you still look for me in dreams, and find me, with a smile that seems
to linger, near the place where we first met?
Then give my hand a tender kiss and walk a while with me,
surrender without thought, without regret.

Has this world roughly torn apart, your soul so sweet, your gentle heart
and crushed from you the spark that I loved so?
Or do you ponder, musing on what really might have been,
if fate had been our friend and not our foe?

When you upon your death bed lie, so pale and still, and yet you try
to wander through the pages of your life,
will memories you dwell upon be times I shared with you?
We knew our love could only bring us strife.

Then will you look with vision clear and hope once more to see me near
and wonder did I often think of you?
And as the end approaches, dear, will I stretch out my hand,
to whisper long forbidden vows, “I do”.

Gee and that only got a HC - who won?

That is a two hanky job Zondrae and just so beautiful - particularly liked these lines
Then when the gentle evening brings a momentary pause that sings,
a melody of unfragmented still,
Cheers

Thanks Maureen,

Glad you liked it. I was trying to express that one person had loved another and thought of them every minute of their day and wondered if the other one felt the same. My mother had, more or less, married me off to a man of her choosing. He was good looking and thought the world of me but... My heart knew there was another life I was ment to lead. The doggie doo sure hit the rotating cooler when I dug my heels in and refused to be pushed.Took another three and a half years til I met Wayne. I knew even before we had spoken that he was IT.

It was in the recent Cervantes and Ellis Campbell and Terry Piggot were the 1st and 1st runner up.

This is pure pleasure Zondrae. You surely deserved your HC. I'll be reading this one over and over.

Thank you Terry and Heather,

Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads my poems. So thanks for the reply. I think we all know that if you can move someone in any way, then you know your 'words' have made an impression.

Thank you for saying nice things about it. As I said, it is a 'pet' poem which was written on my birthday, I find it amusing that I sat down filled with the emotion of defiance and it turned into this lovely thing. Now that it has been awarded, I can tuck it away again.

Wot choo tokkin bout Zondrae, I always read your poems :|

It's hard to comment on this one, because I suspect it is a reflection on your own foreseeable future.
Someone has given advice that poems should not be too personal, I disagree, things that are close to our core, like this one, make for much more powerful expression. Good work Zondrae, congratulations on your award.

Neville,

mmm. I'll have to think about your reply. I was more inclined to expect you to think it was about my past.. But future? It is not really autobiographical. Well maybe just a tad.
