The Bush Poet

This one used to be on the old ABPA forum - this is a repost of it.

THE BUSH POET
© John Peel 1/7/09

If you happen to meet a bush poet,
There are things that you just shouldn’t say
If you don’t want to end up embarrassed,
They may be on paper some day.
He may try to hide where he heard it,
Change a name or a detail or two,
But the truth is, you know the real story –
And the person he writes of is you.

There are things you don’t tell a bush poet,
The things that you’d rather forget –
Like taking the wrong woman home when you’re drunk,
The things that you later regret.
If he writes these things down onto paper,
They’ll be written for all folk to see,
And if someone gets wind that the person is you –
Imagine how bad it could be.

If you’re someone who knows a bush poet,
There are things that you just shouldn’t do,
Try not to do anything stupid –
Or else he might write about you.
If he’s near you, he’s watching and waiting
To see you make one silly slip,
And if he observes that slip happen –
It could be his next clever quip.

If you’re ever around a bush poet,
Don’t talk about having bad luck.
He may use this to his advantage,
Whenever his mind becomes stuck.
Misfortune makes great inspiration
For those with a poetic mind,
And someone else’s misfortune,
He’ll say is by far the best kind.

Whenever you’re near a bush poet,
You might want to heed this advice,
If you happen to do or say the wrong thing –
The end result mightn’t be nice.
If you’re after a recommendation,
One that’ll work out for sure –
The best thing that you can possibly do
Is to act like a total bore!
