In That Room Within Those Walls
Sue Pearce © July 2012

They smile and hold each other in a gentle, warm embrace
as they cross the open threshold to the old stone fireplace.
Where the warmth of flames soon flicker and a glow surrounds the room,
falling softly on the faces of the newfound bride and groom.
Nestled snuggly in the cabin as the night sky gently falls,
making plans towards their future, in that room within those walls.

Plans to hear the cry of babies in the years ahead; denied,
Tears of grievance shed together, not just one but three had died.
As they held the lifeless newborns to the Lord they pleaded, why?
For their faith was surely questioned when there came not one reply.
And three tiny crosses glisten, when the moon's soft shadow falls,
and two lonely hearts were grieving, in that room within those walls.

As the years rolled by each other, many storm clouds passed their way,
but their love and strength would always find them there at end of day.
By the glow of flames still burning after more than forty years,
they would sit beside the fire sharing laughter, fun and tears.
Telling tales of life and mateship, how the joy of life enthralls,
as the flames were slowly dimming, in that room within those walls.

Now the fire glows no longer and the room is dark and bare,
For the flames that once burned brightly are now gone; no longer there.
Where once hearts entwined together by the warming fireside,
still the voices whisper softly of a groom and his young bride.
Now while five white crosses glisten as the moon's soft shadow falls,
There's a sense that souls still linger, in that room within those walls.

Another one that tugs at the heartstrings. You've got the formula all right!
