Let it Rain

6 - Let It Rain

I’m awake now, it’s early,
there’s a stillness to the morn,
the wind has calmed its anger through the night.
Eyes are red and crusty,
a body stretch and yawn,
forecast hot and dusty,
and there’s just no end in sight.

Daylight is my window,
and water number one,
Windmills, pipes, tanks and troughs,
to brush clean on the run.
Tracks are sanded over,
travel rough and slow,
livestock stand in waiting,
there’s no where left to go.

Crows and hawks are healthy,
as they fly in for a drink,
calling, gulping, calling,
letting all know what they think.
For them it’s easy picking,
dead stock every day,
they’ve never had it better,
tell the rain to stay away.

Ants are quickly working,
they know they haven’t long,
to gather what’s on offer,
as the wind is gusting strong,
Forced back home, take cover,
from choking dust again,
the wind is up and howling,
for gods sake, let it rain.

Certainly a vivid picture of the drought stricken years, Glen.
