Mills & Boon

59 - Mills & Boon

Some days are diamonds,
a picnic in a park,
other days are landslides
daylight through till dark.
Hard to make a living,
working day to day,
just enough to get us through,
a little put away.

First job as a youngster,
keen and still at school,
needed on the payroll,
not a job for fools.
Employed as a rouse-about,
running, I was flat,
five quid earned and spent it,
my first Akubra hat.

Eighteen years and counting,
had to buy a car,
needed wheels to socialise,
the payments were bizarre.
Kicked it in to overtime,
shooting with a light,
rabbits, roos, pet food,
days stretched in to nights.

Not a chance of romance,
never off my feet,
everyday all week I worked,
my life was on repeat.
Picking up the groceries
late one afternoon,
fell in love and married
a real life Mills & Boon.

Ute, swag and driving,
passed through Broken Hill,
Innaminka, Birdsville,
marriage skills we’re nil.
Back on track in no time
to tackle the unknown,
balanced life work and wife
set up house and home.

Ten years passed so quickly,
three sons on the ground,
friends, we met so many,
our family life was sound.
Twenty years, kids move out,
back to an empty home,
the constant flow of come and go,
gone, now on our own.

Travel in our wheelhouse,
right around the globe,
England, Europe, USA,
much to see and probe.
On the wallaby, car and van,
packed and hit the road,
trekked around Australia,
our time, no stress, no load.

Happy now in slowdown,
both still work part time,
care and help each other,
mature, just past our prime.
Up each day with interest,
things to say and do,
mobile phones, and FaceTime,
our family is our glue.
