Rat Trap.
Hey has anyone every constructed a bucket rat trap ??
We have had a bit of trouble around the cook pen and spotted a couple last night so made up what we think will do the trick out of an old rubbish bin ?
Will post a picture ( If it works that is ).

No Bob. Sounds interesting though.
My little Jack Russell seems to kill all the rats and mice these days. He's a great little ratter - always hunting.
Can you buy those mouse traps where you can empty them and not have to touch the mouse? You can get bigger ones for rats - that's because rats are bigger!

Re: Rat Trap.
Can vouch for the Jack Russell solution Bob - Elly does the same as Heathers little mate. Is the bucket trap the one with the stick across the top and peanut butter in the middle???

Re: Rat Trap.
Yeah that's it Maureen will check it this morning but I doubt it will be successful as the Labrador was eyeing off the peanut PASTE !!! Not Butter,
The Kelpie is the Ratter here and has caught a few but the other dogs are just hangers on for the excitement of the chase.
Cheers Bob

Re: Rat Trap.
we had limited success with them during a mouse plague - you need bigger than a plastic bucket though as they will get out of a bucket - we used a cut down 44 with a bit of wood against it and a piece of pvc pipe with the dowel threaded through it and the peanut paste smeared on it..I think the problem with it was the hole in the pvc pipe v the dowel - have heard that an empty coke can works better with a hole just marginally bigger than the dowel so that the rat/mouse can get onto it without it moving initially until their full weight on it makes it rotate and dumps them into the water. Good luck

Re: Rat Trap.
G'day Bob,
Try Talon. It can be placed in a safe spot eg under the chook pen. (rats like to nest under buildings, look for a tell tale hole or digging)The rats will find it. Or look for a spot where you think they are getting in and leave it in their path but where dogs and any other animals can't get at it. We had rats last year. They were so beautiful and shiny, and looked so healthy, but were eating all our mulberries and chook feed. I didn't want to get overrun so we trapped a couple and then set the baits out. No sign of any this year (yet).

Re: Rat Trap.
Bit scared of the kelpie getting the dead baited ones Zondrae so decided to try this first then will see how we go.
They are not bad but seem to come out of the gardens around the bird cage . Kelpie got one last night and trap is empty so she might be making an impact.
Cheers Bob
