The Light in My Eyes

Met me darling 40 years ago today. Couldn't let that go by without writing her a love poem.
The Light in My Eye.
(For Christine)
We met on that warm autumn evening
all these four decades ago
and caught in my life’s softest dreaming
felt the pure surge of loves flow.
I thought I had known some affection;
tested that bitter sweet pain;
your eyes lit my eyes in reflection
giving full sense of my gain.
Through struggles and dire predictions
you kept me safe on your shore
while billows of endless conflictions
shook both my body and core.
So now we are older, are ageing,
youth must so slowly take flight,
but til the sun sets on my living
you will shine on as my light.
The light in my eye keeps on shining;
loving and caring we hold
the fire in the furnace still burning;
hearts that will never grow old.
