‘Memories’
I sat on the rocks and gazed at the sea,
as vague recollections came back to me,
reflecting on times from a distant past,
of memories I thought that would never last.
I had dreamed of being a movie star,
being chauffeured in a limousine car.
How it would happen, I hadn’t a clue
but, a dream I thought would always come true.
I’d dreamed of luxury, diamonds and pearls,
of gowns that would catch the wind when I twirled,
of maids and waiters and champagne on ice;
those dreams I had were especially nice.
But destiny changed those plans for my life;
I became a mother, lover and wife;
caring for family and making a home,
creating a garden complete with gnome.
I sat and pondered what life might have been
as I gazed in awe at this magical scene.
I could have had fame, a fortune in pearls,
but I wouldn’t have my beautiful girls.
I’ve been through the nappies, sickness and health,
the teenage years, anxiety and stealth.
I’ve watched them grow and get married with joy
I now have grandkids – 3 girls and a boy.
Those dreams I had were exciting back then;
I guess they still are for girls around ten.
But, I’m happy with the life I have now;
every now and then I can take a bow
when I’m up on stage reciting a poem -
one that I’ve written on my very own.
It’s not quite the same; I’m not on the skids
and I wouldn’t swap what I’ve got for quids!
