WHAT AM I HERE FOR ?
He made me what I am to-day,
my friend Tom Foolery.
At first he came just now and then,
but settled in to stay.
When Tom got well fed at my place
he never went away.
From all the years experiences
there's more that's lost than gained;
a marriage lost and childhoods lost
have piled up pain with pain.
With Tom no possibility
disturbed the present day,
the only opportunity
he saw, was how to play.
He's such a funny fellow, Tom,
with him you have no worry
about such things as future plans;
no urgency, no hurry.
I look into the mirror now
and see a foolish face.
It's him, it's Tom, who stole the years;
pathetic wasted space !
He made a fool of me, for sure,
my friend Tom Foolery.

I think Tom Foolery and his mate Hi Jinks have seen more than a few us in trouble over the years Neville - trouble is life doesn't come with a manual of operation when we are born so for the most part we manage on a wing and a prayer.
Enjoyed your ironic look at life.
Oh and Neville - WOOHOO you are first past the post
whoops
hang on no you're not Marty just kicked my butt (ouch - steady on there Marty) but Neville you still deserve the WOOHOO maybe not as loud for joining us.
Cheers
Maureen

Thanks for the replies Mauren, Marty and Heather. I HATE to admit to this but I heard Tim Minchin on the radio reciting one of his poems about his atheist world view and
I was very impressed by the rawness and hard hitting manner of his writing ( I disagreed with some other aspects ). I am not trying to imitate but trying to find a way to put some more punch into the verse. Got a long way to go yet
