A FOGGY DAY

The morning light is dim, diffused and grey
emerging from the blanket of the night,
as dark yields softly to the foggy day.

The sparrows haven't twittered out to play
and magpies' cheery chiming songs are quiet
when morning light is dim, diffused and grey.

A line of trees stands guard across the way
like high and solemn phantom stalagmites,
as dark yields softly to the foggy day.

For some, the fog is nuisance and delay,
the traffic's blazing eyes speed by, despite
the morning mist so dim, diffused and grey.

For others it's serenity, that may
give hurried lives a moment's calm delight
as dark yields softly to the foggy day.

Where people's lives are strained and stressed, might they
just pause before the hushed and tranquil sight
of morning light just dim, diffused and grey
as dark yields softly to the foggy day.

Thanks Maureen Thanks Marion. The ABC Radio National had a program on last Saturday about Australian villanelles, I was particularly impressed by Suzanne Edgar's one called After Drought. Gave me the urge to have a go.

It was your idea to write of a foggy day, the other related to the format.

Some nice images there Neville. Not so sure I'm a fan of the villian thingy though.

Villanelles grow on you Heather. Like the Pantoum and the Sestina.
Dylan Thomas' Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night and Elizabeth Bishop's One Art are both villanelles and two of the most renowned and admired poems in English poetry.
