YVETTE

Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet

She snuggled up quite warm and safe in her Grandpa’s old bed
with Gramps right there beside her as from a book he read
her stories; all her favourites, about horses and dogs
and Red, the loyal kelpie and the prince that was a frog.

Beside the bed a picture sat in a gold fancy frame.
She’d never met the lady there but she had the same name.
He said he kept it there so it was what he saw each night
last thing before he went to sleep. First thing in morning light.
He said it was her Grandma; he had lost her long ago.
She rested now far, far away ‘neath blankets made of snow.
But when the warmer weather came and with it brighter days
blankets of poppies covered her – bright red and all ablaze.

He told her “Grandma was a nurse, that’s how we met you see.
When I was wounded in the war – she took good care of me.
It was a romance forged in fire beneath tangerine skies
we fell in love and married though some said it was unwise.
She wept when I was sent back home, a man who is one legged
is not much use for fighting. Stay safe my love I begged.
I saw the sad tears of a woman in her soft grey eyes.
She wept and held me close as we both whispered our goodbyes

And that was the last time we kissed. A telegram arrived
to tell me that your Gran was gone and none there had survived.
The enemy were shelling in a heavy fusillade
her ambulance was hit by one – I took that news real hard.
But don’t you be scared girlie, you are quite safe here with me
and Gran’s you guardian angel now, though her you may not see.
I know she watches over you and keeps you safe from harm,
so snuggle down my little love ‘neath blankets soft and warm”

She snuggled down quite warm and safe in her Grandpa’s old bed
with Gramps right there beside her - she heard the words he said
“My sweet Yvette’s, I love you both, my blonde and my brunette,
and in my heart you’ll always be fear not - lest we forget.”
