Drawing on this week's prompts as well as our recent thread on the proliferation of poor grammar ...

BUY-SWAP-SELL
(c) Shelley Hansen 2015

Our region has a Facebook page - they call it BUY-SWAP-SELL -
with 20,000 members now, it isn't hard to tell
how much its popularity has grown, for this is where
it's easy to engage in trade - and never leave your chair!

Forget about the Op Shop! There are bargain clothes galore -
just scroll the mouse and click to find what you've been looking for.
There's pink and punk and retro - any style you care to choose!
Type SOLD and you will soon be walking in another's shoes!

This throw-away society gets rid of stuff so fast;
it isn't like in grandma's day, when things were built to last!
It's easy to discard the old for new, you must agree -
just write a story, snap a pic - and post for all to see!

But sad to say, their sense of spelling sometimes lets them down -
there's chests of draws aplenty, and a once-warn wedding gown.
There's LPs and cassettes - reel good; and carpet for the stare;
and paperbacks of yesterday (the covers have some ware)!

It's going cheep (like chickens), so you'd best be on the ball.
But is it trash or treasure? Do you need this stuff at all?
No doubt we could debate all day - but now I have to dash
and view the latest postings .... 'cos they might take less for cash!!

You're on the money with this one Shelley - well done and a great use of the prompts as well. Funny thing is I have never seen, not once a Dictionary or a Thesaurus for sale at any of these Garage sales. :lol:

Thank you everyone ... gotta have a bit of fun :D

You are right Maureen, you never see books on English usage for sale ... but I doubt it is because they are being put to good use in many cases !!

Cheers, Shelley

Wonderful Shelley - a great read! I'm in NZ at the moment visiting my parents and apparently I'm going to the church garage sale on Sunday so needless to say I will be checking every sign, ha! As a proof reader I'm afraid this is second nature for me anyway so I often have to bite my tongue. You've done well here to tie in the prompts with the recent thread, which I've also really enjoyed by the way - don't even get me started on the glaring and often hilarious errors in Asia!!

I can imagine there would be some great Asian bloopers, Catherine!

About 5 years ago we were in Dubai, and I saw a giant sign that really puzzled me. Below the Arabic writing, the English translation read:

We work around the clock, because accidents don't keep time.

I think something might have been lost in translation here ... or perhaps they are just accidents waiting to happen!!!
