Know When To Hold Them

Know When To Hold Them.

Prices going up or going down I really do not know
it's not something that causes me concern.
A buyers or a sellers market does not turn my head
when to buy or sell is something that you learn.

I brought a house out in the country about ten years ago
was a lovely place with room to spread my wings
House prices were so stable that to buy was not a burden
and the country life brought with it sweeter things.

Three acres, not a big place by any ones idea
but big enough to justify the move.
Some chickens and some fruit trees, a nursery out the back
I quickly settled down into the groove.

I landscaped all the front block with weeping willow trees
and golden wattles spaced out in between
Flowing beds of beautiful gazanias cascading over stones
a place that's fit for any King or Queen.

Iceberg roses on the verandas with creeping violets on the frames
a lovely place to sit and dream a while.
Squatters chairs just to relax in at the end of every day
the memory will always bring a smile.

But things were not as peaceful as the gardens and surrounds
and the future meant that time would see it sold.
I've never gone back for a visit even to this very day
the memories they are just something I will hold.

The bloke who brought it from me said he'd watched it for some time
and loved to watch the colours there unfold.
A white wedding for his daughter would be held in it's surrounds
and to pick it up so cheap was just like gold.

Ah well you know I reckon that's the way life tends to be
the plans you make can always go astray.
Sometimes I dream I'm out there soaking up the summer sun.
but dreams can find a way to slip away.

Goodonya Bob. (Doesn't sound half as good as a caravan park by the beach :))

That's a beautiful write Bob - quite one of your best I think, the feeling of sadness is tangible. Good use of the prompts as well.

Another imaginative treatment of Maureen's prompts, Bob. I love the diversity of our ideas - amazing that so many different poems can come from the same set of phrases.

Cheers

Thanks Nev. Maureen and Shelley a little bit of poetic license but I will let you work out which.

My golf handicap went from 20 down to ten out there as I had at least three par three holes set up.

Really enjoyed this Bob - it's just lovely with its nostalgia, sadness and images. I like the final stanza and the line about dreams slipping away too.
