Greater wholes and rings . . . all sounds a bit anal to me

Some people have their own ideas of what makes a poem a poem.

What if (those who don't like it), don't think of it as a "poem" but just read it the words and think about the meaning -does that make a difference?

Thank you all for your comments (seriously) ...

OK, this piece is 1. a poem', 2. about Australia, 3. written by an Australian (OK, a mongrel-bread one), 4. about an Australian way of life, 5. has good metre but no rhyme.

OK - OK if it rhymed, would it be ok then - and WHY?
Or would it still be shyte - and WHY ?

(Disclaimer)
This post and poetic piece, is is purely for discussion purposes!
No - I repeat NO offense is taken at ANY of the preceding (or succeeding) comments and/or their divergent threads ... :D

If it rhymed it would be a different poem, then I suggest that a qualitative comparison ( is it OK ) would then be irrelevant because rhyming does not make a poem better or worse, only different.

Of course it does. Every poem is a series of statements.

Hey Fred - we know you are a Tip Top bloke, so no need to advertise that you are mongrel bread even if some here think your poem is crummy

Below is a link to a poem that everyone on this site has probably come across at one time or another. It is one of the most famous inspirational poems ever written. Yet there is no regular metre, nor does it rhyme. And it is simply a series of statements.

And you could add to that David, another series of statements in a non rhyming, non metred poem, equally famous ( or used to be ) It starts with the line " The Lord is my Sheherd I shall not want "

Beautiful inspirational words David but to me that's just what they are.

Perhaps it is the way I look at things but I can read something like that and my mind says beautiful but does not relate to it as poetry.

Is that wrong ? I don't know !

What it means Bob, is that you have made up your mind what poetry is - and nothing else is. If you enjoy the words that is all that matters, surely. A rose is a rose by any other name.....
