Wouldn't be entirely sure about that either, Mannie. Florid paranoid psychosis can lead to some pretty erratic and disturbing behaviour.

... I know that drunkenness and binge drinking can cause some very disturbing behaviors ...
I'm not advocating either, the societal impacts of alcohol fueled violence are legion.
I've looked and found that alcohol and the illicit drugs such as heroin, methamphetamines, cocaine and other opioids are linked to violence, but nothing on the herbal. I've yet to see reports on cannabis fueled violence.
I thought you might have some Doc (seriously) ...

My dear 34 year old nephew has just been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He was a social drinker, but really hopped into cannabis and that evil 'synthetic cannabis.' He's in a helluva state now.
I agree with Vic re alcohol & with Bob re whyyy??? folks need this muck in the first place. And the obscenity of it all is that alcohol is apparently not seen by the legislators as dangerous enough to legislate against.......something to do with liquor tax I'd reckon.

Re: Alcohol Fuelled Violence
I don't find the 'why' very difficult at all.
Many people have a great emptiness in their lives. How do you list all the causes? Easier to count the stars in the sky.
I'm sure a lot of it relates to childhood trauma and neglect. Of course, you can then 'blame the parents' (not that that gets you anywhere), but many of the parents had similarly difficult childhoods, which is why they struggle so much with parenthood.
I am sure we all know this stuff.
Don't forget, too, that the worst 'offenders' are often the artists - especially the poets. Lawson. Dennis. We all know all of this.

Re: Alcohol Fuelled Violence
I understand this Stephen, & I do have compassion (too much at times) as some of my family members suffer from depression, so I see this first hand. But it's the rampant drinking culture of our young people that really frightens me. When I was a girl............it was nowhere near the 'basis' for having 'fun' that it seems to be today. I just grieve for why they need to totally waste themselves...until 3am!! thereby wasting the next day with hangovers etc etc, not to mention their diminished bank balances. There is so much beauty in our world, with unlimited inspirational things to pursue, while they choose to mortgage their youthful potential to flaming grog & or drugs. I get 'high' just listening to the sound track from 'ET.'
If only they could get high on Life instead....

The purpose of my life is to serve as a warning to others.

Well, a lot of it comes down to the liberal opening hours of places that sell alcohol. Things changed dramatically in the 80s, from memory.
Besides, it's everywhere. Footy. Rugby. Cricket. Movies. TV. The young people learn what the older people teach them, and it's not all good, sadly.

Re: Alcohol Fuelled Violence
I must again preface my comments with: as a bloke who likes a drink, otherwise I shall be accused of being a hypocrite, but given the governments almost obsessive campaign against smoking which thankfully has been extremely successful, why haven't we seen a similar campaign against our worst drug alcohol.
To paraphrase Manfred I don't think anyone has ever killed their wives or anybody else because of an over indulgence in tobacco! The country is really awash with booze and cheap booze at that. We blame the kids for staying out late when we supply the wherewithal to do so and very little discouragement to behave in the way they are doing. As I said at the beginning our current problems with serious assaults and alcohol abuse is a reflection of our community and we are to blame!

Why do you all look like lizards? (sorry, this joint is kicking in). But seriously, my mate died from marijuana. He tripped over a bong and broke his neck. An evil drug. Yet alcohol is so much more dangerous to society because of it's easy availability. Also Nightclubs encourage late night drinking and therein lies one of the great threats to the safety of any innocent party being on the streets at the same time that the venues are closing. Security numbers are insufficient, police patrols are choked by budget restrictions, any many of the offenders have a history of violence already. And that is not even touching on domestic violence!
I stay home with a bottle of Pepperjack Shiraz and a flagon of Galway Pipe port. I can't even make it out the door! That, in my opinion, is being responsible!
