ABPA - Australian Bush Poets Association

Hello all,
I have decided to take the plunge this year and start a group.
There's nothing around my place, (and in the words of Spike, why would I join a group that would have me as a member?)
so a freind and I are going to muster some poets together.
I live in Medowie which means 'place of talls tress' so we are to be "Poetree Inc."

Now, pay attention this could get wordy!
I am the only fledgling bush poet around here that I know of so far, but not the only poet.
My friend has introduced me to some fun but challenging styles such as Sestina, Villanelle and Pantoum.

My love though is Bush poetry and I was wondering if they could be melded into a mutant form that would be acceptable in a comp.

ie the Pantoum where lines are repeated IF strict rhyme and metre were followed.

eg (and this is just an example - not a GOOD example)


As white clouds play on pallets blue,
proud rainbows arch on mottled grey,
the sun restores a clear, bright hue
while playing out creation's way.

Proud rainbows arch on mottled grey
fulfilling ancient promise born.
While playing out creation's way,
kaleidoscopes at dusk and dawn.

Fulfilling ancient promise born,
the sun restores a clear, bright hue.
Kaleidoscopes at dusk and dawn
as white clouds dance on pallets blue.

G'day Owly...
My two bob's worth...rhyme and metre? tick; Australian theme? tick (I assume the clouds and sky ARE Australian?).
When you've got one you think is comp standard, whack it in and see what happens. I think some judges would at times be glad to see something out of the ordinary anyway.

P. S. These forms aren't as simple as they might seem, are they? I reckon you made a good fist of it with this one. Goodonya, and good luck with Poetree Inc, although I would have preferred "Poetree Ink.

That's the bit I love - the challenge. It makes it even more challenging to try them with rhyme and metre. I might even give it a go! (I think........maybe,,,,,,,,,sometime........should I?)

Thought of 'Ink' but thought it a bit kitch?

"Should I 'inc' or should I 'ink'?
'Ink' I think's a little kitch.
I think that 'inc' for 'ink' I'll switch.
This choosing, though, is such a pain...
'inc' and 'ink'...switch back again!

Good on you Owly, you should have no trouble in the comps, I saw you in action at Morisset in October, you did an excellent presentation of original poetry. I think you are one of those people who must seek out new ways of poetic expression, you've got a lot of deep thoughts. Go for it .

p.s. let me know if you have worked out how to do a pantoum, I considered it once and it's too complicated for me

You never can tell what will catch a judges eye. If you have read my poem 'Rain' you will see an example of this. When I was sending in to a comp they offered $5 per poem or 3 for $10. I had selected two and looking at 'Rain' I thought, mmmm it has no end rhymes but it does have internal ryhme and a good rhythm and metre. Then I exclaimed aloud, "Hah, lets see what 'they' think of that!". To my surprise it won the serious section. So have faith in your work. If you like a poem enough to send it to a comp, you never know, the judge might like it too. I'll pm the poem to you. I have also had the pleasure of, with a poem that only received a HC, the judge (who is a well known performer) contact me and ask if he could have permission to learn and use it.
