What are your thoughts on Alcohol Fuelled Violence?. Did this happen in days gone by?

He lifted up his hairy paw,
With one tremendous clout,
He landed on the barber's jaw,
And knocked the barber out.
He set to work with tooth and nail,
He made the place a wreck,
He grabbed the nearest gilded youth,
And tried to break his neck.

(A.B .Paterson.)

The yard behind the Shearer's Arms,
Reckoned best of battle grounds,
And there in peace and quietness,
They fought their ten or fifteen rounds.
And then they washed the blood away,
Then shook hands as good men do,
They washed away the bitterness,
In ninety-one and ninety two.

It is a reflection of our society.

Most people who drink alcohol do not become violent, but my own feeling is that the current alcohol laws are too lax.

Lift the ban on Marijuana ...

There has never been any marijuana fueled violence, it won't damage your liver and there's NO "binge" smoking .... :D

I can just see the Club precinct now ... 2am and crowds of giggling people handing out flowers to everyone - AND the take-aways would do a roaring trade ...

About 3000 years ago King Solomon wrote : " wine is a mocker and strong drink a brawler " he also coined the phrase " there is nothing new under the sun "
Answers your question Duncan.

I've never thought of "The Man from Ironbark" as being drunk, but perhaps I'm just naive.

Although I am a bloke who likes a drink I would say that alcohol is very probably the most destructive drug that has ever plagued the human race. Our goals are full of people who would not be there except for their stupid criminal actions whilst under the influence of grog. When you think of it the local club/pub is a place that by law is required to provide space for you to park your car so that you can go inside, imbibe, lose your house on the pokies then drive your car under the influence, kill someone or yourself and /or lose your license and very probably your means of earning a living. They are wonderfully evil places selling very , very dangerous drugs.
Manfred marijuana is far from harmless and if you think smoking tobacco is harmful to your health then you should look up what grass does to your body long term. It may not cause the damage to society that booze does but it certainly is a very serious health hazard.

Hear what you're saying Mate. Almost anything enjoyable comes as a health hazard, at least with the 'herbal' there are associated medical benefits. As for the recreational use, there doesn't appear to be any collateral damage. And that has to be a major plus ... :D

Unfortunately not quite right Manfred. Marijuana, even used casually, has been shown to be far more harmful than tobacco in a physical sense and harmful in a psychological sense as well. It is a harmful drug and just like booze and cigarettes it should be avoided.
I am always amazed when I meet vegetarian anti tobacco smokers who use marijuana!

Sorry Mate, I'll have to respectfully disagree. There appears to be a mountain of data suggesting otherwise.

As for myself, I enjoy my scotch - and the occasional beer on a hot day.
I have found however that rum makes me aggro and gives me a horrid caning the morning after, so I just don't drink it

As for the OP, alcohol violence in days gone by? Try any previous weekend ... :)

And marijuana fueled violence? ... "Yeah whatever, but later Man ... " :D
