Sesquicentenary of Banjo Patersons birth

Hi Manfred and Tom
This announcement might be of interest to you and your members. The National Boer War Memorial Association (NSW Committee) will be holding a fund raising lunch at the Banjo Paterson Restaurant, Rockend Cottage Gladesville, Sydney on 16th February 2013 to commemorate the birth of Banjo Paterson 150 years ago. (real birthday Monday 17th). Rockend cottage was Banjo’s grandmother’s home where he lived whilst attending Sydney Grammar School.

Paterson travelled to South Africa as a War correspondent in November of 1899 on the SS Kent with a contingent of NSW troops to the Boer War. His dispatches followed Australian actions throughout 1900. On the SS Kent he began his canon of Boer War Poetry which was particularly appropriate as as the war characterised Australian soldiers as bushmen soldiers.

Funds raised at this lunch will go to support the construction of a memorial to these soldiers in ANZAC parade Canberra. Mr Tim Fischer AO has indicated his intention to be in attendance as our principal guest. Tickets will be $150 per head and spaces in the restaurant are strictly limited. Please let me know if this is of interest to you or your members

regards
David Deasey
