FOXY CHICKS
Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet 07/10
Just before sunrise,
and all is still.
Closed curtains,
no smoke from the chimney,
no watching people,
no four legged guards.
The crossed wires of the fence stand -
impenetrable
but the gate is unchained.
His lucky day.
Hiding in the grass his russet fur blends with the red earth
his ears prick.
Alert
he senses the nearness of his prey.
Belly to ground he takes independent steps furtively forward.
Nudges the gate with his nose,
slinks silently,
secretively,
stealthily.
Snatches his sitting prey without a squawk uttered in protest.
Some days
Lady Luck is just on your side.
