BEEN THERE … Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBarkPoet
Between the shutters he felt the cold air coming in.
The house was old, worn, but still sturdy.
A bit like him –
showing the miles but with more yet to travel.
He pulled the blanket from the bed up around his shoulders.
It had been a dry month.
Who was he kidding?
It had been a dry year,
like the ten before.
Apostles and prophets forecast rain – charlatans.
The animals and nature gave no indication of rain.
Ants were not building levy banks.
Kangaroos were not breeding up.
The trees were blossoming
setting seed like there was no tomorrow.
Maybe there wasn't.
Perhaps the only option open
was the hot gates of hell,
but he'd been there for ten years.

Re: BEEN THERE
A very thought-provoking free verse, Maureen. Well said.
