Not exactly a Merry Christmas lyric but then, Christmas can be a lonely time for some.
The lights are out on the Christmas tree.
Tinsel is on the floor.
What happened to the laughter
and the words of love that we shared before?
I guess I knew, as I placed my heart
under the Christmas tree,
the dream that we’d believed in,
wasn’t there any more between you and me
Could this be the last
Christmas I’ll spend with you?
The last card I’ll sign with love,
the last kiss from you?
And if you leave me now
and when you are far away.
Will Christmas be just a memory
of a love once young as a new born day?
Church bells ring and choirs sing.
Children’s eyes shine bright.
And everywhere, magic fills the air,
but no song in my heart on this night of nights.
I guess I knew as I placed my heart
under the Christmas tree,
the dream that we’d believed in,
wasn’t there any more between you and me.
Could this be the last
Christmas I’ll spend with you?
The last card I’ll sign with love,
the last kiss from you?
And if you leave me now
and when you are far away.
Will Christmas be just a memory
of a love once young as a new born day?
Or will I know again
the touch of your lips on mine
and with your arms around me
find Christmas my whole life time?

Re: The Last Christmas With You
Christmas when you have lost a partner is always sad - when they have died it is final and one accepts the loss but when the loss is circumstances like your poem depicts I suspect a lot of us spend the Christmas season thinging 'what if'. It can be a difficult time for very many people and far from happy

Yes, indeed it can be an extremely lonely time for so many, to the point where some say they 'hate Christmas'. In this particular type of circumstance it seems that when you look around you the whole world is happy except you. A broken heart at Christmas is one of the saddest things imaginable, especially when reflecting on all those memories.

Right on Maureen and Catherine. Loss is hard at any time but particularly over a period meant for celebration.
