Elimination Perpetuation - a Petrarchan sonnet

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Sun Apr 13, 2025 1:41 pm

This area has been languishing and gathering dust for far too long - how about we breath some life into it folks :D

Petrarchan sonnet using the rhyming scheme of abbaabba cdccdc

The mountain slopes are still. Empty and bare.
Where are the brumbies now – where have they gone?
Who’s left behind to sing now their swan song?
Only the magpies chortling ‘beware’.
Parks have destroyed the brumbies without care.
Systematically killed and destroyed
the sentient souls so many folks enjoyed.
Our voices disregarded …. Hardly fair.

There are a few, the hunter’s bullets missed,
who run in terror when a chopper's heard.
They head into the gums, to turn and twist
or only graze the plains in morning mist.
Distrust and fear now rampant in this herd
Australia seems their fate has dismissed.

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
