Though I like to keep in mind one of my favourite scenes in the movie The Dead Poets Society where Robin Williams (as Mr Keating the English teacher ) tells the class that mechanical measuring of poetry is " excrement " and he says " we are not laying pipe, we are doing poetry " So I think your comment about it either sounds right or it doesn't, is spot on. It's in the ear.
