Improve Our Ports

Post by jimlamb » Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:26 am

One of my early attempts in the mid 1990's when there was a great kurfuffle about the work practices around Australian ports. Open to comment and critique. Not that you need any encouragement :D

Improve Our Ports.

The call came through to improve our ports
they were slow and dull and full of rorts.
"We need a change " cried the federal minister
but many believed a motive more sinister.

The news shocked me as around many I'd been
and they all worked well as far as I'd ever seen.
I reckoned in my life I'd seen most every one
they did it their own way and got the job done.

So I saw it my duty to do some research
to see why our exporters had been left in the lurch.
The first thing to do was come up with a plan
it could take many years to cover this great land.

But I stuck to my task and worked day and night
it was hard yakka it nearly killed me allright.
I grew pale and thin and had general bad health
my savings grew low but I wasn't in it for wealth.

At last my studies had come to an end
just as well as I had a bad case of the bends.
I also had headaches , D.T's and ulcers
the doctors said they couldn't find any pulses.

For I had travelled the Barossa and God knows where
Rutherglen, to Mudgee and the Valley of Clare.
When at the Hunter I found ports I never knew
Lindeman's, McWilliams, Wolf Blas to name but a few.

Now the outcome of this I'm tellin' you sport
there's nothing wrong with our bloody great port.
But I'll give some advise when all this is done
After so much port from now I'm on rum.

"G'day" Jim.

A beauty mate, but I still prefer port.

Hopefully Jim, we can all look back on stuff from our early attempts and see now where it could have been better. Though I think that sometimes our early attempts can be more spontaneous, from the heart, unfettered from the " rules " that we try to learn along the way.
Sometimes they do need revising I think. Mine do. ;)

You missed the Drayton family port from the Hunter Valley. That's one not to be missed.

Neville thanks for the suggestion about revisting and improving. Work in progress. You're right about Drayton's, had the pleasure of a few samples when hanging around Denman in bygone days.

Rimeriter a nip of port or a measure of rum? mmmm hard decision.

Cheers,
Jim
