HELLO POSSUM
There’s a possum on my clothesline whose looking in at me.
His eyes are black and shiny and as bright as bright can be,
the hair around his little nose is silvery and light
inside his tiny twitching ears, it’s very soft and white.
He really is a handsome bloke, a good looker is he
I wonder what he’s thinking whilst he’s looking back at me.
That thing in there is human it lives in a great big space .
Its hair is short and yellow moving all around its face.
Its eyes are very big and they are firmly fixed on me
Perhaps I should be frightened and go back to my tree
This human seems to like me, so I’m really not afraid.
Besides there’s that big mango tree whose fruit I like to raid
The lorikeets and magpies say this is the place to come
when you are getting hungry there is always here a crumb.
The kookaburra gets a feed here since his wing he broke
he finds it hard now hunting for himself, the poor old bloke
I think that we will get along perhaps I’ll stay awhile
This human doesn’t seem too bad. Sometimes I see it smile.
There’s room enough in this land for all here to be free
so I’ll stay on the clothesline watching human watching me.
