FUREVER

FUREVER

There were uninvited guests. His stance said hide me.
Scattered memories were flooding through his brain.
Though they seemed to be OK and said “Good Morning”
he couldn’t help but feeling scared again
They sat sharing the latest news with his mate
ignoring the cold coffee in their mugs,
they’d heard tales of a runaway up near the border gate;
he pressed closer to Toby seeking warm hugs.

They were travelling to the far side of the city,
they had friends it seemed lived at the top of town
but they thought they’d say ‘G’day’ since they were passing
and drop in and beg a brew their thirst to drown.
“Hey your dog looks good – he’s new since we last saw you.
Did you get him local? How is he with sheep?
Oh you found him! And he looked like he’d been beaten?
Well he came to the right place so best you keep.”

Toby reached a weathered hand out, stroked the small head
that rested quite contented on his knee,
he fondled the black fur so bright and shining
and he said to the two blokes ‘Yeah, he’ll do me”
Two pair of brown eyes met in adoration
and one plumy tail slow wagged upon the floor,
he thought that his Toby could walk on water.
His furever home he’d found . Who needed more?
