I love it Ross - born and bred near the coast, yet my hubby and I can't wait to hitch up the van and head as far west as possible! We've always loved the ever-changing vibrancy of the outback - just as you describe.
Great phrase - "the chortle of the cuckoo shrike". That's a fun word (chortle) and we don't use it often enough!
